ABOUT
About DEFENSOR
We are dedicated to educating high integrity civilians, VIPs, private security, law enforcement, and the US military in the effective use of reality-based self-defense and Close Quarter Combat (CQC) skills. We know that doing so makes everyone involved safer.
DEFENSOR self-defense and CQC programs are some of the best available. We bring the highest quality custom and semi-custom training to our loyal and dedicated students. We remain humble and add to our knowledge by working with highly qualified sources which we consider modern-day heroes; people who have a winning mindset and who have survived life-or-death circumstances by relying on practical and transferable skill-sets. We will always choose quality over quantity while striving to maintain practical solutions to a violent world.
Our self-defense and CQC systems are based on natural instincts trained into highly memorable and context-applicable skill-sets. Our system is practical and useful regardless of the strength of the individual. Developing the right mindset is key to any good system. Our DEFENSOR Ethos reflects the type of mindset we instill in ourselves and our students.
We primarily teach KAPAP Academy LLC KAPAP/IFFC hand-to-hand, Israeli Combat Point Shooting (ICPS) for handgun, and ICPS for AR-15/Carbine rifles.
Our DEFENSOR Practical Disaster Preparation seminar is a practical process for disaster and emergency planning. Unlike other “emergency plans” on the market, our emergency planning expert has designed a 1-day course to guide responsible citizens through a planning process to create their own unique and effective plan. We provide review of carefully selected high-quality products that blend with the planning.
DEFENSOR additionally provides combat fitness, less lethal (pepper spray), rape prevention, and other self-defense training.
Our training system includes a well-established curriculum and is primarily based on live exercises and simulations. We do not have forms like traditional martial arts, nor do we consider what we do to be a “martial art” in the way most martial arts are perceived. We believe only a wise combination of strategy and tactical learning, with extensive and realistic training, can offer professional and practical solutions in modern high stress situations. This is what reality self-defense should be.
DEFENSOR is the largest KAPAP/IFFC academy in the Western United States.

What is KAPAP?
Krav Panim El Panim: “KAPAP” - is the Hebrew acronym for "Face-to-Face Combat". "IFFC" is the English acronym version. KAPAP/IFFC is the original combat system of defensive tactics, hand-to-hand combat, and self-defense employed by the Israeli defense and security forces in the 1940's before the formation of the State of Israel.
IFFC fight tactics originated in the 1940's and were used by the Palmach (Jewish Strike Brigades) in fighting for the independence of the State of Israel. These Palmach units later formed the core of Israel's special units in the conventional military (Israeli Defense Forces - IDF).
“KAPAP” was a generic term used to describe a system of skill sets for combat. The system was updated from its basic form by the operatives of special units and official instructors that served, and still serve, in Israel's different security branches. Parts of IFFC became known as “krav maga”, which is now taught in the IDF. In Special Forces units it is often referred to as “Hand-2-Hand Counter Terror combatives”.
The history of “KAPAP” has inspired us to dedicate our Academy name under the original KAPAP name and its heritage and use the IFFC term as well in the United States.
KAPAP Academy Colorado, LLC dba DEFENSOR instructors are certified by Mr. Albert Timen to instruct the Kapap Academy, LLC curriculum. Mr. Timen is the founder and head instructor of Kapap Academy, LLC. He is a former Elite Counter Intelligence undercover unit member for the IDF, as well as a former LOTAR (Counter Terror Combatives) and CQB instructor for various Police S.W.A.T. schools. Mr. Timen is one of only a few security operatives in the world to arrest a suicide bomber alive. The bomber still had his explosive belt strapped on and was caught in route to committing a bombing. In his 20 years of operational experience, Mr. Timen has trained special units in various tactics and cross trained with the best operational units in the world.
Today, Kapap Academy, LLC and its official schools serve as a “think tank” - a repository of knowledge and experience with respect to the next level in reality self-defense. Modern IFFC, as provided by Kapap Academy, LLC and its official schools, is based on understanding and utilizing realistic scenarios that have emerged from real-world experience in some of the worst and most threatening environments. Notably, the IFFC taught by our schools minimize the need for either strength or power on the part of the practitioner in taking action to protect themselves or their loved ones. IFFC courses include hand-to-hand, handgun, and AR Close Quarter Combat (CQC), and are designed for security companies, law enforcement, military, and private citizens/civilians interested in upgrading their knowledge and capabilities in this field. DEFENSOR is primarily focused on the civilian aspects of the market, but doesn’t hesitate so contribute to the other segments, and pull in Mr. Timen and other expert instructors on our team for specialized needs.
Kapap Academy, LLC and its official schools serves as an international instructional institute operating and represented in more than 20 countries by local instructors certified under Kapap Academy, LLC. DEFENSOR is the largest IFFC academy in the Western United States.

ETHOS
DEFENSOR Ethos
In times of uncertainty there is a special breed of human ready to stand for what's right: a common person with uncommon desire to defend personal liberty and human dignity. Forged by life's adversity, this person stands alongside other high integrity people regardless of age, gender, race, sexual orientation, religious or non-religious beliefs, or political preferences to serve God (your personal belief), family, and the United States, to protect liberty and our way of life. I am that person.
EGO SUM TELUM® ("I am the weapon") is a mindset bestowed on me by people who deem me worthy to gain knowledge to defend oneself and others. It embodies the trust of those I have learned protection and defense from. By adapting and adopting this mindset, I accept the responsibility it entails. It is a privilege I will earn every day.
My loyalty is beyond reproach. I humbly serve as a guardian to my family and fellow citizens, always ready to defend myself, help those who are unable to defend themselves, and teach those who need to know how. I don’t advertise the nature of my abilities, nor seek recognition for my actions. I voluntarily accept the inherent hazards of my commitment to God, humanity, and liberty. I place the welfare and security of others before my own.
I willingly serve with honor every day. The ability to discipline and control my emotions and my actions, regardless of circumstance, sets me apart from other people. Uncompromising integrity is my standard. My character and honor are steadfast. My word is my bond.
We expect to lead and be led. In the absence of leadership I will take charge, lead my loved ones and fellow citizens, and accomplish what needs to be accomplished. I lead by example in all circumstances.
I will never quit. I persevere and thrive when adversity rears its ugly head. My God, family, and country expects me to be physically harder and mentally stronger than those who would threaten us, our liberty, and human integrity. If I’m knocked down, I’ll get back up, every time. I’ll draw on every remaining ounce of strength to protect myself and my loved ones. I will always defend the truth and what’s right.
We demand discipline. We expect innovation. The lives of my family, and the success and future prosperity of the United States depends on me - my technical skill, tactical proficiency, ability to innovate, intelligent application of knowledge, and attention to detail. My training is never complete, my desire to learn never satisfied.
We train mentally and physically to defend our liberty, safety, and dignity, and fight to win every time. I stand ready to bring the full spectrum of my skills and power to bear in order to protect and serve the people I love most in this life. The execution of my abilities will be swift and violent when required. My actions will be guided by the principles God gave me to live by.
Brave men have fought and died to give me the privilege to live with liberty and security. I bind myself to uphold the proud tradition and feared reputation of those who forged the path I’m on. In the worst of conditions, the legacy of the brave people who established and protected our liberty and integrity steadies my resolve and silently guides me. I WILL NOT FAIL.
Psalm 144:1 "Blessed be the Lord, my rock, who trains my hands for battle, my fingers for war."

Hi Brian,
I wanted to take a minute and tell you how much I enjoyed the ICPS Level 1 training last weekend. You are an awesome instructor and your teaching methods are to be commended! In particular, there are some specifics I wanted to point out to you.
If you’ll remember, before our class started, I told you one of my biggest fears was that semi-auto handguns scared me. The only thing that scared me more than the handgun itself was shooting in groups. The very first thing you taught our class was safety practices with a handgun and why we go through the safety practices that we do. You taught it to us in such a manner that I will never for forget it and it put all of my fears to rest. It helped that we had a great class but with everyone practicing the safety rules you taught us, I couldn’t have felt more comfortable.
Secondly, I told you that I was very familiar with long guns, had been around them all my life, and quite comfortable with them, but, not so with handguns. I had never been taught how to hold a handgun, how to squeeze the trigger, how to aim, etc. and as a result have always been a very poor shot with a handgun. I knew you could teach me all of this but, my second biggest fear was that I would still be unable to hit a target. By the end of the first day I couldn’t have been more amazed! Not only did you teach me all of this, I was hitting the target – WITH THE SIGHTS TAPED OVER!!! I just continued to improve from there with all of the techniques and movement that you taught us. And always with safety in mind. I will never take the tape off of my sights. The way you taught the class made it interesting and made us want to learn and to go home and practice.
When you first told me of the class I had asked you which was the better caliber of handgun to bring and you told me that ultimately it didn’t matter because by the end of class we should be able to pick up any handgun and shoot it the same as the one we learn with. The first day I shot a 9mm that I own. That gun had some idiosyncrasies that I didn’t like plus the holster wasn’t working the way I wanted it to. The second day I used a 40 caliber S & W that I own and a much better holster. You were right. Using the exact same techniques you taught us, and were teaching us that day, I shot it just the same as if using the lighter 9mm. Again, I couldn’t believe I was shooting this good!
Last, but certainly not least, I wanted to point out your assistant instructors. I see why you chose them to be your assistants. Chris and Alisa couldn’t be two more classy people. It didn’t matter that Alisa was taking the class with me, she was just as friendly and helpful as Chris. Two people that I am honored to be in The Tribe with.
Overall Brian, you are an amazing instructor and the class helped me immensely.
Thank you!
Best regards,

"When I attended my first KAPAP class, I was not sure what I was getting into. After the first class I was pumped, after the second class I was hooked, and after the third class I knew I had to bring Brian and DEFENSOR to my workplace. Working in Human Services and dealing with vulnerable crisis driven populations I could see the instant benefits. The potential for violence is naturally heightened when people are in crisis. The approach that Brian and DEFENSOR teach is a perfect match for the staff in our facility.
After easy negotiations with Brian, he graciously met with front line staff multiple times to become familiar with our agency and what we do for the community. Brian had an open dialogue around situational awareness, its relationship to safety, and the means for building awareness skills. All this assisted him in creating a customized training program catered to us. He developed a program that included enhanced situational awareness as well as provide principles for handling context –dependent conflict. Brian teaches the physical and mental aspects of self-defense. The benefit of teaching both makes so much sense. This program and techniques are easy to use for anyone sitting or standing.
Scheduling is extremely easy with Brian. He is very flexible and works with agency regulations and understands the need to be open. We changed the schedule multiple times during training and it was very easy working with Brian.
Brian develops and maintains a safe supportive fun environment for all training. Brian was able to have Alisa attend the last two classes with my team. Her perspective of KAPAP was invaluable to a predominantly female workforce. Both are tentative to individual’s challenges and works with them to give them the best tools to be able to defend themselves and others.
Over the course of a few weeks we now have a badass tribe that is self-confident, safer, and able to better defend themselves and others. The team building aspect that comes out of training for hours with co-workers is an added bonus. There is more trust, respect, and caring among the teams.
What I was not expecting during the course of training is the positive influence it has on me personally. I trained with two work teams, for multiple weeks. With the support of my teams and Brian, I began working on myself and exploring deep rooted fears as well as build up my self-confidence. I am able to explore emotional responses to certain fears with a new perspective. I began looking at longtime beliefs that resulted in roadblocks for success in all areas of my life, which is super cool! I am able to continue to work on myself and allow myself to feel strong and confident.
I would absolutely recommend any courses that Brian and DEFENSOR offers. I have the utmost respect and trust in Brian and his team. It is unmistakable that Brian and his team are very passionate about teaching. I along with agency leadership am looking forward to expanding the trainings to as many staff as we can. This training is a success and will continue to be offered to staff ongoing. Thank you Brian and team!" - Christine S.

Brian,
I’ve attached the feedback form that you gave us on the 14th. I also wanted to offer a few more detailed remarks about the CCW training. First, it was superb. Far better, I’m sure, than I would have gotten from any local firearms shop here in town. So, many thanks to you and Jason for a valuable day.
In no particular order, here are some more thoughts:
- I think the opening introduction session was important. We got to learn about you and Jason, and we got to hear each participant’s motivations and background, too. I think that helped us feel more comfortable with one another on the firing line and during the classroom work.
- For old guys like me and my brother, taking a seat during that period might have been a good idea. But if anyone wants to sit, then everyone should sit to maintain the proper atmosphere. I think if you and Jason remained standing while everyone else was seated it would impart a Master – Pupil sense that would work against us (the participants) being prepared to take responsibility for safety and proper procedures. I might be overthinking this but I did think about sitting down during the intro segment.
- I strongly encourage you to continue to engage the participants in thinking about what they are doing. Asking us ‘why’ we might want a stable base and other questions is a good approach – as opposed to just telling us what we need to do. Make us think about the ‘why’ so we can reproduce the activity better later. That was all excellent.
- The corrective approach you and Jason took on the firing line was great. You were working with us to fix our flaws with patience and firmness. You never seemed exasperated or discouraged with our performance. Thank you for that.
- Similarly, I liked that you didn’t make the training into a shooting contest. You pointed out good groups but I never felt like I was performing poorly relative to anyone else. The focus was always on the technique and position rather than exclusively on the result. Good choice.
- Your shooting range is very cool. I really liked the set-up. Thanks for letting us use your guns and bullets.
- I also liked the classroom work and the video you have put together. All of those elements drove home the seriousness of carrying a weapon and the responsibility it entails, as well as the rationale for doing so.
Many thanks, Brian.

"Brian and Jason,
The ICPS class yesterday was excellent. It is vital to have the proper training before obtaining a concealed weapons permit and your school instilled that in me. The class was run professionally with clear instruction, giving me a level of confidence in handling a handgun that I did not have before. The drills gave me a great practice routine for improving my skills. I particularly appreciated learning a proper safety check for my handgun. I look forward to attending your advanced classes soon." "I had been going to KAPAP Academy [Colorado] for about 6 months, I felt I had a firm grasp on the basics. Little did I know that my skills would be put to the test so soon. If I had known I would be using them so soon I would have paid a little more attention in class. I was visiting the local hang out spot in one of my favorite college bars. It was ladies night and packed as usual. This bar has a nice dance floor but it's a bit small for the amount of people that attend. Inevitably when you're dancing, you bump into people. I upset this particular male by stepping on his boots. Not a big deal; colorful words were exchanged and I brushed it off. Later in the night I bumped into him on the dance floor. He was intoxicated at that point and became very angry with me. He pushed me and stated that he was going to beat me up, "teach you some respect." I assumed the non-combative stance and tried to deescalate the situation, [while] at the same time mov[ing] towards the edge and get[ting] a bouncer involved. He didn't buy it and rushed me. KAPAP's training kicked in and I caught him around the neck and I threw him off to my right. He hit the floor and smacked his face on the wood floor. Lucky for me a few bouncers were already weeding there way through the dance floor. They got there just as he rushed me. If I hadn't had the skills that KAPAP gave me I might have ended up being tackled and slammed to the ground in the mist of a large group, injuring myself and possibly other[s]. This stuff works! Thanks KAPAP!!" - Nick P.

"Dear Brian and Albert,
I'll start off by saying thanks again for this weekend one more time!
Here is a bit more background on my eye condition as well as my perception before and after the course. I was born with a rare eye condition called congenital nystagmus, which - without going into too much detail - essentially causes a constant, uncontrollable quivering of my pupils. Traditionally individuals born with this condition receive a very poor prognosis; the vast majority dying quickly from a tumor surrounding the optic nerve while another significant population experiences total blindness from birth. Considering the statistics I have been very fortunate, and while I do notice some issues with depth perception and fast moving objects I have been lucky enough to beat most of the odds folks seemed to think were stack against me.
Quite a few people in life, not disparagingly per se, have expected me to face limitations in what I do, and, perhaps not knowingly, tremendously impacted aspects of my self confidence along the way. So, not surprisingly I was hesitant about my ability to participate in martial arts and, frankly, scared to carry a firearm.
KAPAP has changed all of that. While I have moderate experience in martial arts, my experience with both Brian H's KAPAP Academy Colorado as well as Albert Timen's KAPAP Academy has completely changed my perspective on what my boundaries may be. Perhaps the key to my success comes from the instruction I have received, but I believe that the simplicity, adaptability, and pragmatic foundation of KAPAP makes it a truly universal solution capable of working for any individual through its grounding in the use of basic body mechanics.
Nowhere has this been more evident for me than in the Israeli Combat Point Shooting system taught by Albert. My experience training with Albert and Brian has completely reshaped my perspective on what I thought was possible. Coming into my first ICPS course I had absolutely no confidence in my ability to handle firearms. My main concern: would I be able to acquire and shoot a target quickly in a life or death situation or would my eyesight cause me to miss the target and, worse yet, hit an innocent bystander?
Two days of KAPAP Academy training with Albert hosted through Brian's KAPAP Academy Colorado put those fears to rest and more. On the first day our class learned that simple body mechanics driven by gross motor skills set the foundation for this system. Utilizing large groups of muscles for simple but effective movements eliminates the need for complex process that simply won't work under pressure. After drilling fundamentals for just a few hours I was able to acquire a target, fire, and hit the target - multiple times! As our class slowly built upon our foundation of fundamentals, our skill and speed built. I started the second day with confidence that had grown tenfold; I couldn't believe the progress I had made. As we continued to build our skills and speed throughout our second day we were able to test our abilities under pressure and discovered that stress actually increased our performance. With a heart rate of 150 I was able to acquire a target, draw my weapon, and group 10 shots - tightly in center mass - in less than 4 seconds.
While I may not have been the best in our class, I found that my eye condition caused no limitations whatsoever. The reliability of this system exists in its results, and the results were astounding. Albert mentioned he could teach a blind man to shoot; in the case of this system he has. While I still have much to learn, these days I feel fully confident in my ability to safely carry a firearm and even more so in my ability to perform - exceptionally - when seconds count and lives may hang in the balance. I look forward to continuing my skill building through KAPAP Academy Colorado's regular ICPS and IFFC (Israeli Face to Face Combat) curriculum.
I would strongly recommend this course as a must-have for any responsible citizen looking to carry concealed. Regardless of body type, skill level, or even most disabilities, Albert will not only teach him/her to shoot and shoot well, but also instill a sense of confidence in his/her own abilities, shooting or otherwise, just as he has for me.
Sincerely,
Mike P." - August 16, 2011
